Morning Fasted Cardio - 4/30/06 9:10 pm   The administrator has disabled public write access.
Hello - I'm not a bodybuilder but I really admire them. I read Oxygen Magazine and that's how I found this site. I'd like to get an opinion or two about morning fasted cardio. My goal is to reduce body fat, and my work schedule recently changed so that I can exercise in the morning instead of evening.

Would you recommend fasted cardio in the a.m. or should I eat breakfast first? What about HIIT on an empty stomach?

thanks,
Julia

Hey Julia,

Welcome to the site!

Here's my take on fasting for cardio. I don't believe training in a fasted state is the way to go, especially intense training like HIIT. But you don't want to be full, either. I think you can get most of the benefits of training in a fasted state, and minimize the negatives, by having a small protein shake about 10 - 20 minutes before your workout. I usually have something like a scoop of protein powder in orange juice before morning cardio. I think you'll find much better results doing it this way. I hope this helps.

I like to have a shake before hand but the way it is scheduled it works that way, then when I get back I have breakfast.

Definitely a shake or something small meal before your cardio since you already fasted for 6-8 hours.
