How do you calculate the percentage of protein, fat, and carbohydrates in your current diet?

Hey Alecia,

Take the number of grams of protein and multiply that by four. Then divide by the total calories. That will give you your protein percentage. Do the same for carbohydrates. For fats, multiply the grams of fat by nine instead of four.

For example, if you have 200 grams of protein and eat 2,400 calories you would multiply 200 x 4 and get 800 calories of protein. Divide 800 by 2,400 and you get 33.33% of your calories from protein.

Hope this helps!

Hey Greg. I'm new to this site. I'm also new to fitness. I've been at a sit down job for about a year and have found I can't eat whatever I want anymore! I'm not obese or anything I just want my old body back! I've always been toned and athletic. I've been going to the gym regularily for a few months and notice results on my upper body. I carry most of my flab in my lower body in the hip and butt region. My quads and calfs have also toned up well I just don't know what to do to really target my problem area and shed the flab. Any suggestions?

Hey Lexus,

Unfortunately, for most of us, the first place we put on fat is the last place it comes off. If you're seeing results, it means what you are doing is working. You just haven't gotten the fat off the tough spots. It'll come. It's just like with most guys, the lower ab area and the love handles are the last to go. Some guys arms can look ready for a contest but they'll still have love handles. If your progress tops completely, you'll obviously have to make changes but if you're seeing improvement, keep doing what you're doing. To get the last little bit of fat off in the problem areas, you'll most likely have to become much more strict for awhile, like someone who is preparing for a contest.

Gregg: How much cardio should I be doing for fat loss? I'm working on the stubborn belly fat (still ) and have been doing 30-45 mins. 5 days per week on the TM. I do pretty intense intervals based on my HRM. My HR gets up to around 85-90% on the toughest intervals. I change it up between flat and fast sessions and slower, hilly sessions. I'm doing upper and lower body split routine for weight lifting - 2 days per week.

I'm not seeing the results I want even though I'm eating clean. I eat about 1600 calories per day, with fat being 25-30%, carbs 30-40% and protein 30-40%. I do have one cheat day per week, though it's not too bad - maybe 2400 calories. I try not to go crazy and I don't eat junk, I just eat more than on other days.

My weight stays about the same - 140. I would really like to get to 135 but I guess I would probably have to give up the cheat day, huh?

Anyway, I've read that the body adapts to however much cardio you do and becomes more efficient at it so that you need to do more and more to maintain your weight. Is that true? Thanks, Julia
